FREE Tax Return Help!

VITA TCEIf you’re naturally a procrastinator, allow me to give you two good reasons to overcome that instinct when filing your 2015 tax return:

  • You may be eligible (more below) for FREE tax return help through an IRS program. If you are eligible, you can’t justify procrastinating because you hate preparing your return and can’t afford to pay someone to do it.
  • Tax identity theft is exploding! After gaining access to your personal information, a crook files a bogus return, impersonating you, and collects a fat refund check. When you file your real return, the IRS tells you, sorry, but you’ve already filed. What a mess!

Are you feeling motivated yet?

Are You Eligible for Free Tax Preparation?

Through two programs—Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) the IRS offers free tax preparation service. The details:

Did you make less than $54,000 in 2015?

Are you disabled?

Is English not your favorite language to speak or write?

If any of the above apply to you, then you may be eligible for free tax return help through the VITA program. Or, at some VITA sites, you can use its software to prepare your own return.

Are you 60 or more years old? Then TCE is the place for you. Its IRS-certified volunteers specialize in pensions and retirement-related issues.

The quickest and surest way to learn whether you’re eligible for these programs is to visit a physical site near you. Use this handy tool: VITA / TCE site locator.

Before you go, collect what you’ll need. Maybe you can get everything accomplished in one visit!

And remember: File soon. Tax identity thieves don’t procrastinate!
